The nine platforms below run from free tiers to quote-only enterprise suites. They differ in three places that matter more than the feature list: what the price counts, which plan unlocks the workflow you need, and how data crosses into your CRM.

We judged each tool on the campaign data flow, not on a feature checklist: where the contact comes from, what decides whether it enters a workflow, how it reaches the CRM and what breaks along the way. Prices come from vendor pricing pages and ratings from review sites, all read on October 27, 2026, and we say so where a review page couldn't be read.

platforms compared

9

offer a free plan

4

publishes no price at all (Marketo)

1

lowest published monthly entry price (Mailchimp Essentials)

$13

Our picks by situation

Best when sales already works in HubSpot CRMHubSpot Marketing HubMarketing runs on the same records as sales, with up to 300 workflows on Professional, but onboarding is a required $3,000.★ 4.4 G2Pro from $800/mo + $3,000 onboarding

Best for Salesforce-centered B2B teamsSalesforce Marketing Cloud Account EngagementPriced per organization from $1,250 a month on an annual contract, with a connector that works on Leads, Contacts and Opportunities. From $1,250/org/mo, annual

Best for large B2B programs with a dedicated adminAdobe Marketo EngageNative sync with Salesforce, Dynamics and Veeva, scoring and routing in every package, and quote-only pricing.★ 4.1 G2Quote only

Best for behavior-triggered journeys on a small budgetActiveCampaignEvent, page-visit and ecommerce triggers from $15 a month at 1,000 contacts, with lead scoring in a separate add-on.★ 4.4 G2From $15/mo at 1,000 contacts

Best for large lists that send rarelyBrevoPriced on emails sent, with a free plan and unlimited multi-step workflows from the $18 Standard plan.★ 4.5 G2Free; The rules run on triggers, and the platform stores the contact's activity so later rules can use it.

The category blurs into three neighbors, and the boundary decides what you should buy.

Tool type

What it does well

Where it usually stops

Marketing automation platform

Runs triggered workflows, scoring and segmentation from contact and behavior data

It still depends on a CRM as the system of record for deals and owners

Email service provider

Sends campaigns and simple sequences

Behavior scoring and CRM handoff are thin or missing

CRM

Holds the lead, the deal and the owner

Nurture logic outside its own add-ons is limited

Workflow connector (Zapier, Make, n8n)

Moves data between apps when something happens

There's no audience, scoring or sending layer to build on

Several tools in this guide sit across two rows. Klaviyo, Mailchimp and Brevo started as email tools and now run workflows. HubSpot and Zoho started with a CRM and added the automation layer. That origin shows in what each one does best.

What are AI-powered marketing tools in this category?

In this category, AI shows up as named features with their own limits, not as a separate product. ActiveCampaign gives each plan 500 AI credits and says its core AI keeps working after the credits run out. HubSpot's AI recommendations for lead scoring and the AI-built contact scores need Marketing Hub Enterprise. Klaviyo's free plan includes $5 a month of Composer (AI) usage, and Customer.io sells AI credits at $10 per 100,000. Ask a vendor which AI feature sits on which plan before it enters your shortlist.

How does data move through a marketing automation platform?

Every tool here moves a contact through the same six steps. The platforms rarely fail inside a step. The losses sit at the joins, where one system passes the contact to the next and nobody checks that it arrived.

<li A form submit, a page visit or a purchase triggers a workflow, and the platform stores the activity for later rules. It usually sits next to a CRM, which stays the system of record for deals and owners.

What is Zoho marketing automation?

Zoho Marketing Automation is a multichannel platform that helps teams capture leads, build visual journeys across email, SMS, WhatsApp and social channels, score leads and track website behavior. It's a different product from Zoho Campaigns, which focuses on email campaigns, and it syncs with Zoho CRM. In this guide it starts at $14 a month at 1,000 contacts billed annually.

What software do marketers use for automation?

Marketers usually pick the automation software that matches their CRM and channel. In this guide, HubSpot Marketing Hub, Salesforce Account Engagement and Marketo Engage serve B2B teams, ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Mailchimp and Zoho Marketing Automation serve smaller email-first teams, and Klaviyo and Customer.io serve ecommerce and product messaging.

Is there free marketing automation software?

Yes, free marketing automation software exists, but it has limits. HubSpot offers free tools for up to 2 users, Brevo has a free plan with 300 emails a day, Mailchimp is free under 250 contacts and Klaviyo is free up to 250 active profiles. ActiveCampaign and Zoho offer a 14-day trial, and Marketo, Account Engagement and Customer.io publish no free plan.

What are the top marketing automation tools?

For most situations, five cover the field: HubSpot Marketing Hub for teams on HubSpot CRM, Salesforce Account Engagement for Salesforce shops, Marketo Engage for large B2B programs, ActiveCampaign for behavior-triggered journeys on a budget and Klaviyo for ecommerce.
